The topic of this research project is the prehistory of the development of complex techniques of perspective in the novel and their theoretization through Henry James at the end of the nineteenth century. The main hypothesis is that there is a relation between cultural ideas and necessities of observation and narrative techniques. The project inquires for what reason increasingly subtle forms of narration and focalization were developed in the course of the nineteenth century.
